How to chase an overdue invoice
Updated 28 June 2026
Chasing late payment is uncomfortable, but a consistent, escalating process gets results without damaging good relationships. The key is to be prompt, polite and firm — and to follow the same steps every time.
1. Send a reminder as soon as it's due
Don't wait. A short, friendly reminder on or just after the due date catches genuine oversights and signals that you track your invoices closely.
2. Follow up by phone
If the reminder goes unanswered, call. Confirm they received the invoice, that there is no dispute, and ask for a specific payment date. Most delays are resolved here.
3. Send a firm written request, with interest
If it remains unpaid, send a firmer written request stating that statutory interest and compensation are now accruing under the Late Payment of Commercial Debts (Interest) Act 1998. Being willing to charge it changes behaviour.
4. Issue a formal demand, then escalate
A final 'letter before action' sets a clear deadline and states your intention to recover the debt. If it is still unpaid, options include a debt-recovery agency or a money claim through the courts. You can also claim reasonable recovery costs.

What is a letter before action?
A formal final demand that sets a clear deadline for payment and states your intention to take legal recovery action if it is not met. It often prompts payment on its own.
